Based in the USA

Hans Neleman is a Dutch-born, American artist whose work seamlessly blends photography, painting, and assemblage art. With a Master of Arts from New York University and a background in fine art from Goldsmiths University, London, Neleman has built a career that bridges commercial photography and contemporary art.

Recognized early on as one of New York’s leading still-life photographers, Neleman has received prestigious accolades, including Kodak Photographer of the Year, American Photographer Magazine Photographer of the Year, and the Hasselblad Master title. His groundbreaking projects, such as Moko: Maori Tattoo, Silence, and Night Chicas, have been exhibited globally and are part of permanent collections in institutions like the National Gallery of Australia and the Peabody Essex Museum.

In recent years, Neleman has shifted his artistic focus toward painting and assemblage, creating striking mixed-media works that explore the harmony of opposites—vitality and mortality, myth and modernity. His assemblages, praised for their raw poetic energy, inhabit the space between abstraction and representation, combining found objects, expressive textures, and a deep understanding of visual tension.

With a career spanning over 30 years, Neleman continues to push artistic boundaries, crafting evocative narratives that challenge perception and invite interpretation. His work, described as “stunning, powerfully theatrical, and visually lush” by The New York Times, remains a testament to his relentless pursuit of artistic innovation.
